review as well as rating out of 5: The book smile, a graphic novel, is an amazing book. The author/illustrator has done a splendid job with the pictures, making the book vivid and inclusive. Smile is about family, friendship and growing up. The author recounts her life in a way that is funny and relatable. The book starts off when Raina comes home from a scout meeting, trips, falls face first onto the pavement and severely injures her teeth. The book follows her journey from 6th grade to 9th grade, as Raina rethinks her not-so-friendly friends, endures an earthquake, recounts the dental nightmares she had following the events from after she fell, and learns the power of family and true friendship. The main theme of the book is that it doesn’t matter what you look like on the outside, it’s what matters on the inside. I rate this book 4.5 stars as it is a funny read, and has a strong message. Even though this book is mainly targeted at younger readers, I still believe this book is completely awesome for older readers.
